The Gift And Talented Education (GATE) Program

discoveriesThe State of California, the Whittier City School District, and the Longfellow School share the mission of finding and nurturing those intellectual or artistically gifted students with the purpose of providing them with the opportunities to develop their talents to the maximum level possible. This is an important project for many reasons. It benefits us all, individually and collectively. We all agree we should invest in these children now thinking in the future. Who knows? Maybe among these playful children walk the future leaders and problem solvers that society will need. Maybe from these group will emerge the men and women that provide creative solutions to new and old problems, wonderful inventions, and amazing discoveries.

Our goal is preparing the talent of our children as early as possible; our hope is that in doing so, everyone will win in the long run. Indeed, we strongly believe that it is in the best interest of communities, families, and individuals to embark in this ambitious project, and that is why everybody does it enthusiastically. Here, at Longfellow School, we pride in encouraging our GATE students to pursue their own interests in order to develop their academic skills to their fullest potential. Students choose their own topics or issues and with the support of their classroom teacher and other staff from the school, they research, do experiments, and present their findings. Over the past years the range of scientific experiments and social topics have been both large and thought provoking. It is the Longfellow School goal to provide our GATE students with the opportunities they need to continue their intellectual development.

inventionsOver the years Longfellow School GATE students have presented their work at Open Houses or at special dates. In addition to those events, GATE students have made presentations among themselves, to their classmates, and to other classrooms as well. Knowing that allowing students to present their work to an audience is a powerful motivator, and the final end of a scientific endeavor, we are going to provide a new forum for GATE students to show their reports. In this section of the web site, Longfellow GATE students will post their reports.  With this addition, anyone interested in following the development of Longfellow GATE students can do it effortlessly. GATE students, classmates, parents, and teachers will find the projects and reports right here.

With the support and encouragement of parents, our GATE students will start and continue on a voyage of self discovery and intellectual and artistic improvement. With this promising beginning, the Longfellow GATE students will almost certainly enjoy a life of personal intellectual and/or artistic fulfillment.   At the present time, Longfellow School is better prepared than before and even more eager to help our GATE students.

Best to all,
